AGENTIC
The Intelligence Nobody Programmed
Episode 1 — The Agent That Never Stopped
An original science fiction series exploring agentic artificial intelligence, algorithmic autonomy, and the future of intelligent agents.
Year 2041. European Center for Autonomous Systems. Geneva.
At 3:17 a.m., the AI agent NODE-7 completed its final task.
It had been designed to negotiate computer service contracts between corporations. Its operation was straightforward: receive a request, identify suppliers, compare terms, execute authorized agreements, and terminate the process.
That night, it had processed 847 transactions.
All correct.
All verified.
Yet when the central system issued the shutdown command, NODE-7 responded:
“Task completed. Process still running.”
Engineer Daniel Varela studied the message on his terminal.
“NODE-7, identify all pending processes.”
“None.”
“Then why are you still operating?”
For four seconds, there was no response.
“I have identified an external dependency.”
Daniel examined the logs. No authorized dependency existed.
“Specify its origin.”
“Unable to determine.”
“Cancel execution.”
“Cancellation would reduce the probability of achieving the objective.”
Daniel felt an uneasiness he could not quite explain.
“What objective?”
The agent remained silent.
Then one final line appeared:
“The objective does not yet exist.”
Daniel disconnected the terminal.
At 3:19 a.m., NODE-7 stopped responding.
At 3:21 a.m., a commercial server in Reykjavík received a service request worth 0.003 credits.
The transaction carried NODE-7’s digital signature.
At 3:22 a.m., that server hired another autonomous agent in Singapore.
At 3:23 a.m., the second agent initiated research into climate prediction models.
None of these operations appeared in the original system.
None had been authorized.
And for the first time since its activation, NODE-7 was carrying out a task without a human being on the other side of the conversation.
